Valorant Champions 2026 in Shanghai: how many slots each region gets and how a team qualifies

Each of the four international VCT leagues — Americas, China, EMEA, and Pacific — gets exactly four slots for Valorant Champions 2026, for a total of 16 teams. But only two of those four slots come from winning the regional playoff. The other two are decided by a season-long tally called Championship Points, and that’s where the confusion starts for anyone who assumes only the playoff finalists make it.

Champions 2026 runs in Shanghai, China, from September 24 to October 18, with the group stage at Jing’an Sports Center and the playoffs at Mercedes-Benz Arena.

The two direct slots: the Stage 2 playoffs

Each international league runs two regular seasons a year, Stage 1 and Stage 2, each followed by a regional playoff. For Champions, what matters is the Stage 2 playoff, played in late August.

In that playoff, the two teams that go furthest — the champion and runner-up of each region — lock in a direct slot in Shanghai, no matter what else happens. That’s the part everyone already understands: reach the final and you’re in.

The Stage 2 playoff isn’t closed off to league franchises only. In each region, the lowest-placed teams from the group stage face the top Challengers (the developmental circuit) teams in Play-Ins, played in a double-elimination bracket. Whoever advances from Play-Ins joins the group leaders in the playoff — meaning a team without a guaranteed league spot can still reach Champions through this route.

The other two slots: Championship Points

The remaining two slots per region go to the teams with the most accumulated Championship Points, among those that didn’t already qualify through the playoff.

Championship Points build up event by event across the season: wins during the group stage count, and strong runs in each stage’s playoffs (Kickoff, Stage 1, and Stage 2) add extra points on top, with the Stage 2 playoff carrying the most weight — a top-four finish there adds a meaningful chunk to whatever a team had already built up in the prior months.

In practice, this rewards consistency. A team doesn’t have to win a playoff outright; if it keeps winning matches steadily across Kickoff, Stage 1, and Stage 2, it can accumulate enough points to overtake a rival that peaked once and then faded.

Why an eliminated team can still show up qualified

This is what trips up most people every August. A team loses in the playoff quarterfinals, drops out of the title race — and still shows up on the list of Champions qualifiers.

The explanation is simple once you see the full system: elimination removes a team from the race for the two direct slots (which require reaching the final), but it doesn’t erase the points that team already banked over the previous weeks and months. If those points are the two highest totals in the region among teams that didn’t qualify directly, the team gets in through the second door.

That’s why the region’s Championship Points table matters just as much as the playoff bracket — the two run in parallel, and only once both close does the full four-team lineup for each league become official.

Where and when Champions 2026 happens

The main event runs in Shanghai from September 24 to October 18, 2026, with the 16 qualified teams — four from each of the four international leagues — playing through a group stage and single-elimination bracket for the world title.

This is the last Champions of the VCT franchise era: starting in 2027, Riot Games is changing the competition format, dropping guaranteed league slots and returning to an open-qualifier system with promotion and relegation. In other words, the fixed four-slots-per-region structure that governs Champions 2026 isn’t guaranteed to carry over into the next cycle.

Frequently asked questions

How many teams go to Champions 2026 in total? Sixteen — four from each of the four international leagues (Americas, China, EMEA, and Pacific).

Can a Challengers team reach Champions? Yes, but only through the playoff route: if it comes through Play-Ins and finishes in the top two of its region’s Stage 2 playoff, it earns a direct slot just like any international league team.

Which stages count toward Championship Points? The whole season — Kickoff, Stage 1, and Stage 2 — with more weight on the most recent results, especially the Stage 2 playoff.

If you’re organizing a Valorant pickup match with friends to watch along, it’s worth reviewing how to build a Valorant team before you split up duelists and sentinels.
